History

Serving Families Since 1940

We have been serving our area families for years. It is an honor to be a part of the rich history of this community, and we plan to be a part of it for many years to come.

Staff of McGriff Funeral Homes

The McGriff Funeral Homes' history started in 1940 when Harry Dennis expanded his local furniture and undertaking business, opening the Dennis Funeral Home in Louisville. The funeral home began at its present location, located at 825 Chestnut Street in Louisville. On August 14, 1948, John and Martha Neal purchased the Dennis Funeral Home from Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dennis. Their son, Jack, was 10 at the time.

On June 30, 1949, the original building and land were purchased from the late W.S. (Stubby) and Kathleen Goodenough.

The Neal family, which consisted of John, John Jr. (Jack), Martha, and Judy, expanded the business in 1968 with the purchase of the Dillman Funeral Home in Louisville from the late Walter and Janet Dillman. Eventually, the Dillman Funeral Home was sold to a private individual. In June 1982, they purchased the Linton Funeral Home in Kinmundy, Illinois, from Robert Linton due to the declining health of Beryl “Dutch” Linton.

In July 2018, JW Neal Funeral Homes were purchased by Chris and Sandra Triplett. The Triplett family is proud to carry on the traditions set forth by the Neal, Dillman, and Linton families. The Triplett family has made several changes and improvements. New funeral service vehicles, remodeled casket selection rooms, new furnishings, and the addition of a new state of the art electronic sign, displaying upcoming services. It is the only sign of its kind in the area servicing a funeral home.

Then, on September 1, 2020, Tyler McGriff purchased the Triplett and Neal Funeral Homes from Chris and Sandy Triplett. Tyler has also carried on the traditions and has also continued to make many more improvements to the facilities in Louisville and Kinmundy. On October 1, 2021, we opened our newest location in Flora at 500 West 12th Street, formerly the Kohn Funeral Home, and we are carrying on the traditions set forth not only by the Neal, Linton, and Triplett families but now also the Kohn family.

Our funeral home is proud to be the ultimate purveyor in funeral service in Clay County and the surrounding communities.

Family is a very important word in our language. Your family’s memories are important. At McGriff Funeral Homes, "The Care and Service Your Family Deserves" and exceptional pride is taken in helping families have a valuable and healing memory of their loved one.
