Walter Hale

Walter Carol Hale, 101, of Louisville passed away at 7:32 pm, Saturday, March 26, 2022 at the Clay County Hospital in Flora.

Walter was born on December 25, 1920 in Clay County, the son of Mallory E and Grace A. (Sewell) Hale. Walter enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and he served most of his time in the Pacific having been over seas and making it to Tokyo, Japan, and was discharged in 1945. He was a master watch maker, having worked for many different jewelers over the years. Walter married Lois Alfern Daugherty, on August 17, 1975, in Oklahoma, and they shared 45 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on September 19, 2020.

Walter had many different hobbies over the years, some included having been a steam engine operator, having gone around to many different old farm shows to operate them, he had some of his own old single cylinder John Deere engines that he loved to take places and show off as well. He also use to run the old Clay County Jail museum for a period of time. He loved to go out to his little shed behind his house and have all the guys come over to visit him. Everyone use to like to go over to “Pappy’s” shed and sit around his old wood burning stove and tell stories. Also, in his younger years he was a licensed Auctioneer having conducted many auctions over the years. Walter was a member of the Louisville American Legion Post #914, Flora Masonic Lodge #204, and had been attending he Louisville Christian Church until his health declined.

Walter is survived by his son; Frank (Jessica) Hale, of Santa Fe, Texas, stepchildren; Ron (Nancy) McGee, of Flora, Karen (Eric) Lake, of Effingham, Gary McGee, of Louisville, Michael McGee, of Flora, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, sons; George Hale, Wayne Hale, daughter; Carolyn Hale, and brothers; Allen Hale, and Jack Hale.

Graveside services honoring the life of Walter will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 2, 2022, at the Oskaloosa Cemetery, rural Louisville, with Gary Kuhlig officiating. A short visitation will be held on Saturday at the cemetery where friends may call from 12:30 to 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Walter’s memory to the Louisville American Legion Post #914, and will be accepted through the funeral home and at the cemetery.
