Leola Lewis

Leola May Lewis, age 93, of Louisville, IL, passed away at 1:45 pm, Sunday, March 23, 2014 at St. Anothy's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, IL. Leola was born May 22, 1920 in Crawford County, IL, the daughter of Emery Shaw and Florence (Cotterell) Shaw. She attended a one room grade school as a child and attended the methodist church of the small village of Landes, IL of which she was a member. She graduated from Oblong High School in Oblong, IL and went to two years of college at Charleston College. She received a teacher's certificate to teach in Elementary schools. She then taught in one room school in Illinois and when World War II broke out she was employed in the military at "Camp Atterbury", Indiana. Her last job was at L.S. Heath & Sons Candy Factory in Robinson, IL. She married farmer, Harrell Lewis of Clay County on May 7, 1949 in Olney, IL. She and her husband lived and farmed in the Clay County area. He preceded her in death on December 1, 2010. Leola is survived by son, Darrell (Beulah) Lewis of Olney, IL; daughter, Shirleen (Garry) Birch of Ingraham, IL, 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Emery and Florence Shaw; grandparents Asa and Lucinda Cotterell; husband Harrell; brother Carl Shaw and also one infant brother; sister Viola Earnst; sister-in-law Ruth; and brother-in-law Elmer and nieces, nephews and cousins. Arrangements are being handled by J.W. Neal Funeral Home, Louisville, IL, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Wednesday, March 26, 2014. A funeral service will be held at J.W. Neal Funeral Home at 10:30 am, Thursday, March 27, 2014. Interment will be at Brooks Cemetery, rural Ingraham, IL. Memorial donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association and will be received at the funeral home as well as online.
