John Adams

John Ray Adams, 62, of Greenup and formerly of Clay County, passed away at 1:30 am on Monday, July 15, 2019 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon. John was born on September 25, 1956 in Marion, the son of the late Hosea Leon and Betty Carol (Barbee) Adams. He married Rita Whitford on September 25, 2015 in Effingham and she survives. Mr. Adams worked in the construction business and also was a school teacher. He attended Eastern Illinois University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. John served in the United States Army and was a member and past commander of the American Legion Post 566 and a member of the Charleston VFW Post #4598. In addition to his wife Rita, he is survived by three sons; Steven (Janet) Adams of Ft. Wainwright, Alaska, James Joseph (Dana) Purcell of Dieterich and Andrew Michael Purcell of Illinois, two daughters; Misty (Todd) Shannon of San Antonio, Texas and JoAnn Francise Purcell of Dieterich, 11 grandchildren and by several nieces and nephews. In addition, to his parents, John was preceded in death by a brother, James Adams. Private memorial services honoring the life of John will be held at a later date. Military rites will be accorded.
