Gloria Marlys Jones, 87, of Des Plaines, formerly of Chicago, IL, passed away Thursday evening, January 30, 2020, at Landmark of Des Plaines Nursing Centre.
She was born on February 16, 1932 in Garden City, South Dakota, the daughter of the late Bryan and Violet (Stoner) Challand. Until her retirement, Gloria was a valued employee of The American College of Surgeons. In her 27 years there, she worked in a variety of clerical roles, making many friends along the way. She was a member of the Daughters of Rebekah for her entire adult life, moving through the officers' chairs, or the Grand Poobah, as her daughters liked to call her.
Gloria loved to travel. She vacationed in Mexico, cruised to Alaska and Hawaii, went to Disneyland; took road trips across country with friends, eventually organizing her own bus travel trips where she developed quite a following of people who traveled far and wide with her on organized tours. Her only regret was that she hadn't traveled to more places when she was younger and more able.
Gloria is survived by four daughters: Donna (David) Urlaub of Lombard, Pamela (James) Stencel of Palatine, Annis (Ernie) Fuller of Libertyville, and JoAnn Wallak of Waukegan; four grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jack Challand, and sisters, Dea Checchin and Dawn Hughes.
Graveside services honoring the life of Gloria will be conducted at a later date at the German-Methodist Cemetery in Bible Grove. Triplett & Neal Funeral Home in Louisville is in charge of the care and arrangements. You are invited to share your memories of Gloria and leave a condolence at www.triplettandneal.com
